Getting a seven-year-old up before dawn sounds impossible. The trick is who's more excited — and it isn't always the kid.
There's a stretch of the Red River five minutes from our house where, if you get there early enough, it's just you, the mist, and the occasional splash. I started taking my oldest out at dawn last summer, mostly on a whim.
The fishing is genuinely better early — but that's almost beside the point.
It's the quiet
No phones, no schedule, no little sibling demanding equal airtime. Just a kid and a rod and a lot of unhurried conversation that doesn't happen any other time of day. You'd be amazed what a seven-year-old will tell you at 5:30 a.m. on a riverbank.
A few things that make it work: keep the trip short (an hour, tops), pack a thermos of hot chocolate, and have zero expectations about catching anything. The goal isn't fish. The goal is the morning.
Licenses, quick note: kids under 16 generally don't need one, but you do — and ND and MN rules differ depending on which bank you're standing on. Sort that out before you go.
Some mornings we catch nothing and it's still the best part of my week.
